| Once again, FiveToNine Design has teamed up with Openshaw Design to produce temporary street signs to flag up DD07 venues on Creekside. Limited edition T-shirts printed especially for the festival and bearing four of the SE8Sign designs will be available to buy in The Platform Café.
FiveToNine, a design-for-print company, have been in Deptford for many years. In 2005, Deptford High Street came top of the table as the city’s most interesting high street. A mathematical formula was devised for Yellow Pages to measure diversity: D=f (m,b,c), where m is a wide mix of businesses, b the availability of everyday goods, and c the presence of a large number of businesses selling the same kind of thing.
FiveToNine decided to play with this idea to create images that celebrate the high street; for instance, there are 16 grocers selling bananas, you may find plastic bowls in 9 shops, you can make a bet in 6 bookies, buy fish in 8 places, get your hair done at 12 salons, and pick up a wig at 6 shops. The proliferation of wigs and bananas led to the images being given the Warhol treatment – thus referencing ideas of consumerism, mass production and the glamorisation of everyday objects. Some of these images can be seen at 5-9 Creekside during the festival. |
